Should You Be Hosting a Wellness Retreat?

I love having 100% of my business online, but it is missing a little bit of the face-to-face, one-on-one that you get with an interpersonal brick and mortar business.  That’s why, in 2013, I decided to have an event at Club Med for my favorite clients.  I didn’t have a clue what I was doing, but I knew Club Med did and felt like I could mess up a little and they’d have my back.  The nice thing was, I had Christina manage the event for me and it went off without a hitch.  As a matter of fact, it was amazing.  Everyone had fun and it was more than anyone could’ve asked for.  We’ve had an event every year since.

This year our event is at a beautiful new resort-spa and will be the best one ever.  Hutchinson Bay Resort and Spa.  

This week, I interviewed Sheri Rosenthal.  Sheri’s specialty is running events.

I believe in giving presents and the only thing we disagreed on is that.  At our last event, Vitamix and DreamCloud made it possible for me to give away $thousands of dollars worth or great gifts and in addition to that, we give out bags and pens, pads, and healthy snack food for during the event.  Last year, we each made an ornament with sand and shells and event pieces to remember the event and take home with us.  It was a nice team building activity.  Our groups like the team building events and the prizes.  We gave out a full year subscription to Healthie and a Natural Health Immersion Printed.  We’ve given head-shots and even videos of your elevator pitches.  For many of our clients, it was their first experience with video, and was nice doing it with their peers.  We’ll always include gifts as a part of our events/retreats because giving is one of my core values.

Based on Sheri’s definition, I would call our “events” retreats.  We don’t have 100’s of people at our events, normally there are 35-70 people.  We get to get to know each other a little and spend some one on one time, which is really nice.  I think of retreats as “restful”, our events aren’t restful.  We work pretty hard.  It’s not like one of those events where you see the person on the stage and you’re on your own the rest of the time.  We are together the whole time.  There is real growth and movement.  We had one event where we brought in big speakers and it was a thrill to meet them.  We learn from every event.  We’ve learned that the best thing we can do for you is give you everything we have to move you up to the next level and work with you to solve whatever it is you are working with at the time.  So, while I consider our gatherings events, they are definitely retreats.  It is a lot of work and it costs a lot of money.  The only time I was worried about losing money was when I paid a lot for speakers.  I then paid a lot for advertising to pay for the speakers and learned after all that, what my customers really wanted was time with us.  That’s important to remember.  If you remember those steps we look at to take your customers from one step to the next.  Your retreat should take them up a step.
